Chapter Seven

Horam eyed El-Hashem with displeasure. “You have disappointed me again, El-Hashem. Your plan to distribute poisoned drugs among the populace failed miserably, and now Elid is dead and the demon Akron is in the custody of the Vampire Council. What else have you planned that can go wrong?”

El-Hashem bowed so low his nose almost scraped the ground. “My Lord, I apologize for the ineptness of my allies. The vampire, Daniel Vale, is more powerful than I thought at first. Also he has surrounded himself with similarly powerful vampire friends who are now alerted to the fact that you have risen and are aiding me in my plan for revenge.”

“I aiding you?” Horam’s light brown skin flushed with annoyance. “You forget yourself, El-Hashem. Your objective pales in comparison to mine. World domination is not an act of revenge, it is merely my right as god of the Underworld. I alone can rule, the others having long been lost, buried in the sands of time. We need an army strong enough to defeat the vampires. They stand in the way of success and must be exterminated.”

“No mean feat, my Lord,” El-Hashem said dryly. “Vampires have uncanny ways of knowing what is about to happen. The minds of men are open books to them. An army of humans could never escape the vampires mind probes, and a demon army would be nothing if not unreliable. There are however, the ones called rogue vampires, like Elid. They are few in number to be sure, as the Vampire Council generally sends an executioner to get rid of them, but they can be lethal if armed properly. Also, your power to block the vampires’ thought transference would be of great value. Daniel Vale was unable to communicate with his friends or with his government contacts while you exerted that power.”

“Hmm…” Horam shifted uncomfortably on the large, ornate armchair El-Hashem had provided him with in deference to Horam’s apparent need for a throne of kings. “It used up a lot of my energy and cannot be sustained for long periods of time. If this Daniel Vale is so important an enemy, he must be captured and eliminated. He must have some weakness we can use against him.”

El-Hashem nodded. “Akron mentioned the vampire’s affection for a human doctor. He would be easier to capture. Perhaps we could hold him as a hostage to bring Vale to us.”

“Then we must make it so. Where does this human live?”

“Of that I am not sure.” El-Hashem took an involuntary step back when Horam showed further signs of anger at his answer. “My Lord, Akron’s mind was as usual somewhat puzzled by following Elid from Los Angeles to a city he did not recognize, but I understand from those we sent to America that the doctor works in a hospital in Pasadena, so we could have him followed from there.”

“Very well. Have your minions take care of this or I may have to take matters into my own hands and transport to Los Angeles at great inconvenience to myself.
